Frequently Asked Questions

How do you work?
My main approach is psychodynamic - looking at how our earlier experiences impact on our present lives and relationships. Even when we really want to change, we can find ourselves thinking or behaving in the same old ways. Psychodynamic therapy can help us uncover unconscious patterns so that we can change them.
My training as a psychosexual therapist has given me additional expertise in a variety of cognitive and behavioural interventions and I have attended courses in approaches such as CBT, Mindfulness Training, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Trauma Therapy (EMDR). Where appropriate, I integrate these approaches into my psychodynamic work with couples and individuals. I may give homework exercises, particularly in sex therapy.

How do I make an appointment?
Please ring or email me on marianoc@hotmail.co.uk. Once we find an agreed time, our first 50 minute session will will be to discuss your current situation and why you are seeking help. We will then decide if therapy could be of benefit and, if this is the case , we will continue to have regular weekly meetings at that time. Should you need help elsewhere, I may recommend a different service or practitioner.

What is the fee?
I charge £150 for a 50 minute session. I offer a limited number of reduced-fee places for those on low incomes. Payment is usually made by Direct Bank Transfer.

How long do I have to wait to start?
I will try to see you for an initial consultation within a week of your first contact. If I have no availability, I may be able to recommend a colleague.

How long is each session?
Each session is 50 minutes long. Occasionally I might see you for a double session.

How many times a week do I need to attend?
Usually once a week, but sometimes more frequent or less frequent sessions may be appropriate. This is something that we can discuss together.

How many sessions will I need?
I see people for both long and short therapy. The duration will depend on the nature of the problem and ,of course, how much time you have available. I suggest a minimum of 6 sessions. Long term therapy can last several years.

What happens if I cannot make my appointment?
Missed sessions will be charged at the usual rate.

How do I know that the service is confidential?
I am an accredited member of COSRT, BCP and UKCP and I comply with their strict codes of confidentiality.

Will I need to attend with my partner?
Many people come on their own to talk about personal issues around anxiety, commitment, loss, relationship or psychosexual issues.
Although I recommend that couples work together on a relationship or sexual issue, I appreciate that one partner may refuse to attend and there are times when partners may benefit more from individual counselling.
